Written assessments test your knowledge of learning elements such as:

  • The hierarchy of Occupational Health and Safety hazard control measures
  • The legal requirements and underlying principles covering occupational health and safety in the workplace
  • Typical hazards associated with a range of work environments and the procedures used to minimise risks
  • Using Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
  • Understanding the dangers associated with working at heights (such as on ladders, scaffolds and elevated work platforms)
  • The common causes of electrical accidents and the effects of electric shock on the human body
  • First aid and CPR procedures for the workplace including the priorities of first aid management in various scenarios
  • Selecting the right fire extinguisher for a given type of fire and the basic principles of fire fighting
  • Commonly used workplace safety signs.

Practical assessments assess your ability to demonstrate key performance criteria and include:

  • Working safely with electricity including the precautions to take to minimise the chance of electric shock (such as earthing, circuit breakers and residual current devices)
  • Managing various simulated casualties including airway obstruction, respiratory arrest and cardio pulmonary arrest and shock
  • Performing simulated single and two-person cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Assessing a casualty for injuries
  • Identifying height risks and using appropriate safety equipment to prevent falls
  • Selecting appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and fitting it correctly
  • Correct manual handling techniques to prevent injuries
  • Classifying, handling and storing chemicals according to safety guidelines.

Assessment are conducted within realistic, workplace settings and are held over the duration of the unit.
