Prepare to work safely in the construction industry (CPCCWHS1001) is a core competency within over 30 qualifications including the Certificate III in Arboriculture.
It meets the general construction induction training requirements of:
- Part 1.1 Definitions and Part 6.5 of the Model Work Health and Safety Regulations;
- Division 11 of Part 3 of the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996 for Western Australia; and
- Division 3 of Part 5.1 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007 for Victoria.
You will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment when you successfully complete this course and be able to apply for your General Construction Induction Card (White Card).
What will I learn during Prepare to work safely in the construction industry?
Interlink’s course teaches you the health and safety legislative requirements of construction work. Safe-work practices and duty of care requirements are defined to help you work safely and prevent injury to yourself and others.
Learn to identify construction hazards and to take risk control measures. The roles of designated health and safety personnel are discussed as well as the meanings of safety signs and symbols. You will also learn to select and fit common personal protective equipment (PPE) used in construction work.
The protocols for reporting hazards, incidents and injuries are explained along with the procedures for responding to emergencies.
What sort of assessments can I expect to complete?
Interlink’s course contains a combination of written and practical assessments.
Written assessments test your knowledge of learning elements such as:
- The roles, rights and responsibilities of business owners and workers for working safely in construction
- Definitions of the terms hazard and risk
- The five basic steps of risk management:
- identify hazard
- assess risk
- consult and report
- control hazard
- review
- Construction hazards (such as asbestos, confined spaces, excavations, noise and working at heights)
- Safe work practices for construction work
- Meanings associated with construction safety signs, symbols and tags.
Practical assessments assess your ability to demonstrate key performance criteria and include:
- Identify and report two construction hazards explain how the risk could be reduced or removed in those scenarios
- Explain the basic procedures for responding to incidents and emergencies
- Discuss the purpose of job safety analyses (JSAs), safe work method statements (SWMS) and safety data sheets (SDS)
- Select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and demonstrate how to correctly fit it to yourself.
Assessment are conducted within realistic, workplace settings and are held over the duration of the unit.
