Study Monitor safety compliance of vegetation control work in an ESI environment at Interlink

Monitor safety compliance of vegetation control work in an ESI environment (UETTDRVC27) gives you the knowledge to work as a safety observer within the electrical supply industry (ESI). Monitor vegetation control work to ensure safety compliance. Spot and stop unsafe working practices and prevent any unauthorised people or equipment entering the safe approach distance (SAD).

Examine the relevant government guidelines and codes of practice for safe work and access near live electrical and mechanical apparatus. Learn how to prepare risk assessments and to implement control measures including job safety assessments.

What do I get for completing Monitor safety compliance of vegetation control work in an ESI environment?

Completing Interlink’s course meets the national requirements for the accredited Unit of Competency (UETTDRVC27).

Monitor safety compliance of vegetation control work in an ESI environment (UETTDRVC27) is a competency within the Certificate II in ESI – Powerline Vegetation Control.

You will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment when you successfully complete this course.

Note: This course superseded UETTDRVC27A – Monitor safety compliance of vegetation control work in an ESI environment in September 2019.

What will I learn during Monitor safety compliance of vegetation control work in an ESI environment?

Interlink’s course teaches you to monitor safety compliance and control risks for vegetation work near live electrical apparatus. Understand and follow occupational health and safety, sustainable energy and environmental principles to reduce the chance of accidents and incidents in your workplace. Look at the requirements for working at heights, lifting and working with power tools and ensure all jobs follow cutting plans and workplace procedures.

Learn to position yourself within the jobsite so you have an unobstructed view of the vegetation control work. Recognise hazards, warnings and safety signs. Identify unplanned events and respond to any problems with safety compliance according to workplace procedures.

Prepare for your role as a safety observer by confirming the workplan and identifying potential hazards and the control measures you can implement to minimise risks. Develop and agree on a method of communication between yourself and the vegetation control worker so you can alert them to any safety issues on the job.

Learn the necessary reporting and record management tasks to follow on completion of the job and check work schedules, cutting plans and drawing for compliance.

What sort of assessments can I expect to complete?

Interlink’s Monitor safety compliance of vegetation control work in an ESI environment (UETTDRVC27) course contains a combination of written and practical assessments.

Written assessments test your knowledge of key learning outcomes including:

  • Commonwealth/state/territory and local government legislation, standards, codes, supply authority regulations and/or enterprise requirements of a safety observer
  • The importance of focussing on the task and not getting involved in anything else
  • Emergency response and rescue, including first aid
  • Enterprise-specific duties, protocols and procedure of a safety observer
  • Techniques in observing others in the safe performance of their work
  • Safe approach distances (SAD) for vehicles, plant/equipment, people, hand-held tools as well as special limits of approach for authorised persons
  • Understanding the risks and control measure to put in place in proximity to electrical and telecommunications apparatus.

Practical assessments assess your ability to demonstrate performance criteria such as:

  • Applying relevant work health and safety and occupational health and safety requirements
  • Identifying the role of a safety observer at the worksite
  • Selecting the correct position to monitor and observe the work form ground level
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the principles of electricity, the three-phase power system and safe working zones
  • Recognising aerial voltage systems and high and low aerial circuits
  • Identifying and controlling hazards
  • Conducting risk assessments, workplace hazard assessments and identifying pre-job hazard assessment check (HAC) items
  • Analysing and making decisions taking into account the site conditions site and weather conditions
  • Understanding switching requirements for authorised tree trimming work on voltage overhead lines
  • Confirming vegetation species and types and appropriate cutting techniques and equipment to use for the job.

Assessment are conducted within realistic, workplace settings and are held over the duration of the unit.
