What will I learn during Operate and maintain chainsaws?
Interlink’s course teaches you the to operate chainsaws using safe cutting techniques and to maintain them in good-working condition. Learn how to assess the timber you’re preparing to cut for defects and hazards and to select the right cutting method for the job. Place supports to give you a stable base for cutting and cross cut timber using low-risk work methods.
Recognise and apply workplace safety procedures and select appropriate personal protective equipment
(PPE).
During your studies you will plan repair and maintenance activities in line with manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations. Identify, diagnose, tag and report chainsaw faults, malfunctions or irregular operation for repair or replacement. Complete maintenance tasks to keep chainsaws in operational order.
What sort of assessments can I expect to complete?
Interlink’s Operate and maintain chainsaws (AHCMOM213) course contains a combination of written and practical assessments.
Written assessments test your knowledge of learning elements including:
- The parts of a chainsaw and their functions
- Chainsaw checks and maintenance including sharpening the chain, checking and adjusting the bar, cleaning air filters, cleaning and replacing spark plugs
- Principles and practice for operating chainsaws
- Australian Standards relevant to chainsaw operation including the use of personal protective equipment
- Identifying common defects in timber
- Cutting techniques, patterns and sequence of cuts
- Workplace health and safety requirements, hazards and risks associated with operating a chainsaw.
Practical assessments assess your ability to demonstrate key performance criteria such as:
- Identifying any site risks and implementing control measure for chainsaw use
- Selecting and using appropriate personal protective equipment
- Confirming first aid and emergency procedures, equipment and personnel are in place
- Performing routine services on chainsaws, for example; removing, checking and cleaning air filters; filling fuel tanks and chain oil tanks; checking safety devices
- Checking and sharpening chainsaw chains
- Identifying, tagging and reporting chainsaw faults and malfunctions
- Following workplace safety procedures relevant to operating a chainsaw
- Cleaning and storing chainsaws
- Safely cross-cutting fallen timber using compression and tension cuts with a hand held chainsaw.
Assessment are conducted in a variety of places including forest environments, workshops, botanical gardens and agricultural settings and are held over the duration of the unit.
